What is peer support?

Peer support is a type of support that is provided by people who have shared experiences. It can be a valuable resource for people who are struggling with a variety of challenges, including social anxiety.

Peer support can be provided in a variety of ways, including:

  • Support groups: Support groups are groups of people who meet regularly to share their experiences and support each other – like WalkTheTalk. They can be in person or online.
  • One-on-one support: One-on-one support is provided by one person to another. It can be in person or remotely.
  • Mentorship: Mentorship is a type of one-on-one support where a more experienced person provides guidance and support to a less experienced person.
  • Peer advocacy: Peer advocacy is a type of support where people with shared experiences work together to promote change and to advocate for the rights of people with those experiences.

Peer support can be beneficial for people with social anxiety in a number of ways. It can provide a safe and supportive space to talk about your experiences, to learn from others, develop coping mechanisms and even just practice social interaction. Peer support can also help you to feel less alone and more connected to others who understand what you are going through.

Here are some of the benefits of peer support for people with social anxiety:

  • Reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness: Peer support can help you to feel less alone and more connected to others who understand what you are going through.
  • Provides emotional support: Peer support can provide a safe and supportive space to talk about your experiences, to share your feelings and to receive encouragement from others who understand.
  • Offers practical advice and support: Peer support can provide you with practical advice and support on how to cope with social anxiety, such as how to manage specific social situations you’re struggling with.
  • Promotes self-efficacy and empowerment: Peer support can help you to build self-efficacy and empowerment by showing you that you are capable of overcoming social anxiety.
